Welcome to our site! My name is Nika, I am the mom behind Kailani Greens.
Kailani Greens started out as a passion project during the pandemic. I came from a family of farmers. My father from Ifugao is a farmer. Farming is a way of life in the mountains, a skill that we were taught in school and practiced in the community. Sadly, in the Philippines, farming gets very little support and is often looked down upon. Many farming communities are poor and the number of farmers in the country is dwindling.
Food security and stability became an important issue during the pandemic, as vegetables became harder to source due to border restrictions and fear of transmission. I saw the need for families to be able to grow their own superfood even in small spaces. We need nutrient-dense, organic vegetables to be included in our diet, to help boost our immunity. It appears that this won't be the last pandemic in our lifetime, hence the need for more urban farms.
I grow my son's microgreens in a small greenhouse right outside our house. We currently supply freshly-harvested and live microgreens to restaurants and households here in Cebu.
All kits offered in our microfarm comes with instructions and 1-min video tutorials to make it easy to grow microgreens and sprouts. Results may vary depending on the environment you are growing in, but with a little trial and error, you can grow your own superfoods right in your own kitchen.
It is my dream someday, to be able to reach thousands of households, and teach them how to grow their own microgreens and sprouts. I hope I am able to inspire mothers and fathers, to teach their children the important skill of growing their own food, because during these unprecedented times, survival is key.
Kailani Greens was born out of a need. During the first 2 years of my son's life, we followed the guidelines of Tamang Kain movement, which is plant-based nutrition for children.
After his 2nd birthday, we slowly introduced meat, but he refused. So we had to give him pesticide-free, organic food, which is quite hard to find. Hence, we grew our own microgreens and sprouts.
Microgreens and sprouts are perfect for children because they are easy to grow, and contain up to 4 - 40x more vitamins and minerals than their mature counterparts. It is the best way to improve the immune system.
Currently my family meals are pescatarian, to make it easy to prepare food on a daily basis.
Kailani means The Sea and the Sky. It represents our life here in Cebu.
